One is an 05 and other is 08, both with the cummins isx. I want to purchase an otc code reader and would like a few opinions. The snap-on guy and my local parts store have the same story, one tool is around 500 dollars and the other that will do more than just read/clear codes is 1500 dollars. I feel that the one that only reads and clears codes will work for what i want to do. So, for those of you that are familiar with these otc tools, is the more expensive diagnostic tool worth it? What i expect out of the tool is to be able to find out why the check engine/abs light is on.
Then determine if it is something that I want to fix in my little shop or take the truck to a heavy duty repair shop. I recently have had both trucks to wallworks in fargo, one i knew needed alot of work but the older truck was a total surprise on what was repaired. Now i'm wishing I would have tried to repair both in my shop. Especially since the check engine light has come back on on both within 250-500 miles.
This electronic 'bs' sounds like a big hassle, but haven't had to get a tow yet.knock on wood. My 3406 and NTC weren't that old when they've been pulled home a few times. I am not aware of any 'cheap' diagnostic tools for heavy equipment.

I think the choices are a laptop with OEM software, or Nex techiq. Probably about $2k either way, and you will still have limited functionality. I have been told they are different than the Cummins.
I have a Davis data logger and the engine error codes are totally meaningless. It can log engine RPM, load, speed etc etc but error codes are not relevant. If you want to look at ALL the electronic modules on a truck, you do NOT want Cummins software, as it will only 'talk' to a Cummins engine.
On the other hand, if you buy a generic tool that will talk to every module on the truck, keep in mind that a tool like this will have limited ability to perform special tests, like cylinder cutout or other types of actuator tests. A ProLink is one of the few generic tools available for the HD market. Based on what you are telling me, this is likely what you want. You could also look around on e-bay or Craigs list and try and find an older ProLink for less money. Make sure that if you do, you get one with the heavy duty standard cartridge. This will talk to everything on a standard HD J1587/1708 data link, but it will only give you codes, and some limited data.
Cummins Insite is the ultimate Cummins engine software, but again, is useful only on a Cummins engine. Not only will this software cost you nearly a grand, you'll also need to spend almost another grand buying the adaptor to go between your laptop and the engine. Then of course, you gotta figure out how to use it. I hear Dodge has pretty much shut that feature down now though. I try to keep watching eBay but I'm not as good at that as I used to be. Even if you worked at a Cummins dealership, you couldn't do it without the blessing of mother Cummins. I can't imagine anything else you would want to do with it that a customer level version wouldn't do. Posted 7/11/2011 17:33 (#1858571 - in reply to #1858365) Subject: RE: diagnostic tools for cummins engine Mount Vernon, WA I honestly haven't tried to shop for one, since I already have one at the school.
I do know this: I wouldn't give you even 25% of what they go for new, for a used one. Those things are WAY overpriced for what they do. The individual cartridges for each engine were like 6 or 700 dollars EACH last time I checked. When you stop to realize that you can almost buy factory software for that, it's like, 'why?'

Effective Information The unique information sent by Connected Diagnostics™ is much more valuable than the lamp on the dash, and more complete than raw data pulled from the electronic engine system. Connected Diagnostics™ identifies and prioritizes the fault codes, determines the probable cause of the fault, reports it to you and automatically identifies the nearest Cummins-certified repair location with Genuine Cummins parts and factory-certified technicians trained to repair your equipment. And, only Connected Diagnostics™ can report engine performance derate timers that may have been triggered by the fault.
