For a training class, I needed to install the SonicWall SSL-VPN NetExtender 3.5 Client on my Windows XP laptop. Now that class is over, I'm finding I can't uninstall the client. When I go to Add/Remove Programs, and click to uninstall, I received the following error: 'SonicWALL SSL-VPN NetExtender is still running. Please close it and try again.'

I've stopped the related service in the Services Management console, and still receive the error when attempting an uninstall. How do I get rid of this client?

I am running a Sonicwall NSA 3500 on SonicOS Enhanced 5.9.1.5 16o. On several laptops we use NetExtender Windows Client Ver. 7.5.223 running on Widows 7 x64. These are all Dell Precision workstations. We use a combination of Sonicwall Global VPN and NetExtendar SSL-VPN.

A lot of us prefer NetExtender because of it's performance and stability which had been great for the last couple of years. After the last Windows update in June, NetExtender came to a screeching halt. Looking at the logs this is the message: Status ID: 0x06000308 Source: Engine Description: NetExtender has been disconnected for one of the following reasons: -There was a break in the network connection -The connection was idle for longer than the configured idle timeout -Your user account was logged out of the SSL VPN portal Then the second message. Status ID: 0x0000314 Source: Engine Description: Remote Access Service error!

(Rebooting might resolve the problem) Attached data: RAS Error 651: The modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error. Of course I rebooted and got the same messages. The day this happend I rolled back Windows to a time before the update. NetExtender worked again. Then a week later I was prompted to allow the Windows update to happen again.

Then I though I could troubleshoot the NetExtender issue by checking for updates and installing those that were needed. Still no luck. I checked the timeout settings on the Sonicwall, no luck. I extended the timeout settings, no luck. NetExtender also fails on one other user's Precision after she allowed the update to occur. Has this happened to anyone else? Any Ideas on where to go from here?

That works without any issues. So the issue cannot be on the Sonicwall.

This may be chasing ghosts (and I haven't had TOO much admin exposure to NetEx) however I know after the most recent set of Windows updates, which were applied to our servers, we had some issues with our remote locations accessing network locations over the WAN using SMB. This is a totally different protocol from VPN, but the fundamentals are there. The issue was discovered that Microsoft has decided to tighten some security features on NetBIOS and the way that is communicates. If there is a proxy involved, well. There was a Windows 10 security update changing a couple of services to manual start which will stop NetExtender from running. To fix it please go to Windows Service manager, run 'services.msc', then Look for the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and Remote Access Connection Manager to see if those two services have been started. If not, set them to automatic start and then try NetExtender again, it should connect now.

You may want to amend Group Policy to always set these to Automatically start. Apologize for the delay in responding to you. I will give that a look-see tonight when I get home. I noticed that the service is set to manual.

I changed it. When I get my mobile workstation home, I will check to see if it stayed on Auto and reinstall NetExtender. I have pretty much given up on it, and started using Global VPN again, which oddly enough has been working great under Windows 10. When using Windows 7 and XP, Global VPN would take a dive every 5 to 10 minutes of use.

That is why I started using NetExtender. It just worked better and faster. Maybe this Remote Access Connection Manager will do the trick. I will let you know. Samuel; The issue with NetExt is related to a Windows Update. At the time when NetExtender went south on me, I was running Windows 7.

The April Windows Update killed it. I rolled back the update, and NetExt worked. In May another Windows update. This time I allowed the update to happen.

I figured I had to solve the issue one way or another. In July I upgraded the same laptop to Windows 10, thinking that maybe the new Windows will fix the issue, it did not. For three years I used Global VPN on my XP laptop. My connection would drop every now and then. August 2015, last year, I upgraded the laptop to Windows 7. That did not fix the dropping issue, in fact the drop outs became more frequent. I tried NetExtender and it worked perfectly.

It was faster than my old Global VPN. Now since my NetExt no longer works, I went back to using Global VPN. It's been three months and I have not experienced one drop out the whole time. We still get this issue from time to time but it's not as bad now, it usually occurs when the user is on WiFi and there is blip in the network connection. I have created a simple.bat file with the following commands to allow the user to restart NetExtender without the need to have them restart their computer. They just need to run this as Administrator.
